United States
The NOAA Weather Center has confirmed and recorded 15 individual weather and climate disaster events from January through July 2023, each with losses exceeding $1 billion. This is the highest number of billion-dollar disasters ever recorded for the first seven months of a year since NOAA began tracking these events in 1980.
In addition to disaster events, previously existing issues related to economic inequality, have been exacerbated by an already tenuous rebound from the losses and challenges brought on by the pandemic.
